Artist Statement
My paintings are inspired by many things that include my life experiences, Michigan, travels, and my hometown. I work in acrylic, oil, pastels, and watercolors
I aim to create pieces that invoke feelings and contemplation that may move the viewer. I try to carry that and achieve a look that brings out the joy of experiencing art. When I really like the look of an area, no matter how small, I study how I can keep using that success in other places. I'm not satisfied until I feel the piece is consistent and balanced.
Biography
Until recently I've been primarily self taught. In the last several years I have been a member and participated
in painting classes at the Paint Creek Center for the Arts (PCCA) in Rochester Michigan where I have worked with the "Thursday Morning Painters." I frequently paint plein air in the southeast Michigan area with the Paint Creek Plein Air Painters.
I have had paintings displayed at PCCA, Rochester Hills City Hall, the Northville Art House in 2020 and 2021, Bizzy Buzz in Rochester, Royal Park Hotel, Hannan Center Kayrod Gallery in Detroit, and the Birmingham Community House 2021 Our Town exhibits in 2021 and 2022. Three paintings were chosen for the 2022 PCCA Biennial at the Pontiac Flagstar Strand Gallery. Two paintings were chosen for the PCCA 2022 Student-Faculty Exhibit. My design was chosen for 2022 Rochester Magical Mural Tour which led submission of an 8'x4' mural displayed downtown Rochster in the month of September. "Van Hoosen Barn" is on permanent display at the Henry Ford Macomb hospital.
